The façade of a grande dame of the 19th century holds court on the banks of Vila Nova de Gaïa and imposes itself facing the city of Porto. House founded in 1880 by an artist and merchant, Adriano Ramos Pinto, who managed to conquer commercialy the Brasilian market with top quality wines from Portugal and Porto of, while innovating in production and communication.

Founded by Adriano Ramos Pinto in 1880, Casa Ramos Pinto has an illustrious history. The winery was initially used to make wines headed only for South America, Brazil in particular, it soon became known around Europe for its high-quality wines. Adriano Ramos was particularly gifted at marketing and started a campaign using his famous Ramos-Pinto posters, which to this day grace wine shops all over the world. Mr. Ramos was himself a young artist quite well-known in the artsy circles of the time in Porto. He founded the company at the tender age of 21, conquered the Brazilian market and brought his brother in to help him run the company in 1896.

He also played a role in creating a new wine category – medicinal wines that were said to have positive properties, such as the famous “Vinho do Porto Febrifugo” and “Porto Quinado” of the 20’s that proclaimed the virtues of quinine. The Ramos Pinto company was also a pioneer in the study of Portuguese grape varieties, viticulture in the Douro region, as well as in winemaking and the mixing of grapes from different estates.
